History
The creation of Altamira is closely linked to another Prague art supplies store, Atelier Zebra. It was founded in 1990, and four years later, a second store was added on the opposite bank of the Vltava River in Jilská Street. When the founders of Zebra decided to go their separate ways in 1998, the store in Jilská became an independent business, and the shop was named Altamira.
Soon the business expanded with another store located on Skořepka Street. Shortly after, in 2000, one of the first e-shops with art supplies in the Czech Republic was launched at vytvarnepotreby.cz.
The shops in Skořepka and Jilská were tiny, which gave them the charm of delightfully crammed little treasure troves. Over time, however, they no longer met Altamira’s needs. That’s why, since 2014, the stores have been located at new addresses—still just a short walk from each other and close to the Old Town.
In 2024, Altamira joined Artikon, a company that connects art supply stores across the country. In May 2025, we said goodbye to our Spálená branch, and its range of products was distributed among the Altamira store in Martinská, Zlatá loď, Zebra, and our online shop.
